Elizabeth Cowell, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
My name is Elizabeth Cowell. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Master’s in Divinity, both from Bethel University in San Diego. I utilize CBT and EMDR mainly to work with trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief. I also use Gottman and EFT to work with couples. My approach My approach to therapy is influenced by Aaron Beck, who founded Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Many people struggle with misconceptions about themselves, often created by their environment. I use CBT to help people change those misconceptions so they can feel better about themselves and have a more positive outlook on life. My focus I work with individuals, adolescents, couples, and families who have experienced trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. My communication style I’m a laid-back therapist who likes to use humor when appropriate. I take a team approach and have conversations with my clients. My journey to therapy When I was a senior in high school, I took a psychology class and was fascinated by it. I was so intrigued that I told my friends I wanted to be a marriage counselor. It took me a couple of different majors and degrees to get to where I always knew I was supposed to be. My goals for you I typically ask what the client’s goals are. However, sometimes they need a little more help making their goals measurable. My first session with you I’m big on history-taking. I want to know how someone has grown up, who they were close to growing up, and what their support system is like now.
