What should a new client know about working with you?

I take what is called an integrative approach to the work I do with clients in the office and via telehealth (video or phone sessions). Integrative therapy is comprised of a combination of various psychological theories. One of these is called psychodynamic therapy. Traditional psychodynamic therapists focus on helping the patient develop insight. I also includes aspects of what is called, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in my work with clients. CBT is applied to help people adjust their behavior and the ways they think about their experiences in order to ultimately improve the way they feel. Additionally, I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). During EMDR therapy, an accelerated learning process is stimulated hrough the incorporation of eye movements and other forms of rhythmic left-right (bilateral) stimulation (e.g., tones, taps, vibrations). In EMDR therapy sessions the clinician asks clients to focus on the traumatic memory while simultaneously experience bilateral stimulation (BLS). With this process, for many clients, the emotional intensity of the memory is reduced.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session depends on the type of therapy you would like. With talk therapy (psychodynamic) clients can enter the session and simply discuss how they have been feeling, and what they have been thinking or doing, an expansive process. CBT is more structures, upon entering the session clients identify a few specific topics they would like to discuss. They will learn different approaches to adjust unhelpful thoughts and begin behaviors that will begin to help them feel better. EMDR is a highly-structured therapy. I work with clients to create a specific plan to process past experiences and current challenges in the initial few sessions. Then, one by one incorporating feelings, thoughts, images, and somatization (physical expressions of emotion) the client reviews difficult expeirences until they are no longer upsetting.
