Getting to know Emily Mathis

I’m a Licensed Social Worker with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Saint Xavier University and a Master of Social Work from the University of St. Francis. My clinical experience includes working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in a variety of settings, including outpatient therapy, family therapy, crisis support, case management, and substance use treatment. I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel heard, respected, and comfortable being their authentic selves. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients can openly explore their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and life experiences. My approach is collaborative and individualized, recognizing that every person brings their own unique strengths, challenges, and goals to the therapeutic process. I work alongside clients to better understand patterns that may be affecting their emotional well-being, develop healthy coping skills, strengthen communication and relationships, and build confidence in navigating life’s challenges. Whether you are experiencing stress, relationship or family concerns, emotional difficulties, life transitions, or simply feel that something needs to change, I aim to meet you where you are and help you move toward the goals that are meaningful to you. Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy staying active and busy, participating in meaningful activities, and spending quality time with the people I care about. I believe maintaining connections, finding enjoyable activities, and making time for the things that bring us fulfillment are important parts of overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our work together will be collaborative, intentional, and tailored to your individual needs, experiences, and goals. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to provide a supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered throughout the therapeutic process. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), DBT-informed strategies, mindfulness, client-centered therapy, and strengths-based approaches. Together, we can explore the connection between your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and experiences while identifying patterns that may be contributing to current challenges. Therapy may include developing practical coping skills, improving emotional regulation, strengthening communication and relationships, increasing self-awareness, and learning healthier ways to navigate stress and difficult emotions. I strive to make therapy both supportive and practical, while moving at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We will build on your existing strengths, identify areas for growth, and work toward meaningful changes that can extend beyond the therapy session and into your everyday life. My goal is for you to leave therapy with greater insight, confidence, and tools to help you navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience. Sessions may be structured or open ended depending on what feels most supportive. Above all, I prioritize trust, curiosity, and active listening so you can show up authentically and feel truly heard.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together will be collaborative, intentional, and tailored to your individual needs, experiences, and goals. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel comfortable being yourself, exploring difficult experiences, and working toward meaningful change without judgment. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), DBT-informed strategies, mindfulness, client-centered therapy, and strengths-based approaches. These approaches can help us better understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and experiences; identify patterns that may be holding you back; develop practical coping and emotional regulation skills; and build healthier ways of responding to life’s challenges. Sessions may be structured and goal-oriented or more open-ended and reflective, depending on what feels most supportive and helpful for you at the time. I recognize that your needs may change from session to session, and I strive to create flexibility within the therapeutic process. Above all, I prioritize trust, curiosity, compassion, and active listening. My goal is to create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where you can show up authentically, feel genuinely heard, and have the space to explore what matters most to you. Together, we will build on your strengths, work through challenges at a pace that feels manageable, and develop tools that support lasting growth and greater confidence in navigating your life.
