Eric Rennacker, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hello, my name is Eric Rennacker. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, and for the last 10 years, I have been working with people in recovery from addiction. Trauma is the gateway to substance abuse, and I am EMDR certified. I am also in recovery myself, having 37 years of sobriety—I know how hard recovery is. I earned my bachelor's degree from California State University, Northridge, which laid the foundation for my journey into mental healthcare. My approach I meet people where they are in their lives using a humanistic approach of unconditional acceptance, as I believe the therapeutic relationship created between client and therapist is the foundation for what can be difficult work. My focus I work with clients who come to therapy with dual diagnoses. Sometimes these are primarily substance abuse-focused clients, and sometimes I see clients who are primarily mental health clients. My experience is that underlying trauma and attachment issues are very much contributing factors in addiction and require careful attention in treatment. My communication style I am told that I am very easygoing and low-key. I am curious by nature and interested in creating a collaborative relationship with my clients, understanding that they are the experts on themselves. My journey to mental healthcare I was in the mortgage business and hated it, so one day I told the broker I was working for that I was quitting and going to school. Going back to school with a plan was a new experience for me, and I allowed the counselors to guide me through the process all the way through grad school. My own struggles with substances made going into the field a natural choice, and it’s very gratifying to watch people come to treatment with no hope and get better. My goals for you I allow my clients to identify what has brought them to therapy and then collaborate with them on how treatment will proceed.
