Dr. Florence Lewis, PhD, LMFT

Psychotherapist
IL
I am a couples therapist who works with queer and straight couples and individuals to help them build stronger, healthier relationships — and ultimately, a healthier life. I believe deeply in the power of relationships. When people are in truly good relationships — romantic partnerships, friendships, even working relationships — it positively impacts their mental health, their physical health, and their overall well-being. That positive energy ripples outward and affects everyone around them. The inverse is equally true: unhealthy or toxic relationships can take a real toll on a person's body, mind, and the world they move through every day. That belief is at the core of everything I do. I bring relationship science into the therapy room and help clients understand not just how to communicate better, but how the quality of their connections is directly tied to how they feel — physically and emotionally. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of Inclusive Relationship Therapy, a teletherapy practice serving clients across Missouri, Illinois, and Florida. I am proudly LGBTQ+-affirming, and my practice is a space where all couples and individuals are welcome, seen, and respected. If you're ready to do the work and transform not just your relationship, but your overall well-being — I'd love to work with you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want you to know a few things before we even meet. First, I am direct. I won't dance around what I'm observing in our sessions — I'll name it clearly and compassionately, because I believe that's how real change happens. At the same time, I lead with warmth and genuine care for the people I work with. You'll always feel that, even in the hard conversations. Second, I bring relationship science into our work. I'm not just asking how your week went — I'm drawing on research about attachment, emotional connection, and how relationships function to help you understand what's happening beneath the surface and what's possible on the other side. Third, I take a holistic view of your health. Your emotional health and your physical health are equally important to me, and I won't treat them as separate. If you're managing a health condition, we'll talk about how your relationships may be affecting it — and how strengthening those relationships can actually help you manage your symptoms and feel better overall. You can expect me to be engaged, present, and clear about the direction of our work together. This is a professional space, but it doesn't have to feel stiff or clinical. My goal is for you to leave every session with something — a new understanding, a new tool, a new perspective.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start by getting clear — on where you are, where you want to be, and what's been getting in the way. In our first session, I take time to understand not just the presenting concern, but the fuller picture of your relationships, your health, and your life. Relationships don't exist in a vacuum, and neither do the challenges that bring people to therapy. I want to understand all of it. From there, we build a plan together. Sessions are 50 minutes and held via secure telehealth video, so you can access care from anywhere in Missouri, Illinois, or Florida. I draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), trauma-informed approaches, and solution-focused techniques — not rigidly, but in whatever combination best serves what you're working through. Throughout our work, I'll consistently tie what we're doing in the session back to outcomes — the real, tangible changes you want to see in your relationship and in your overall well-being. I also regularly check in to make sure the work still feels relevant and is moving in the right direction for you. My goal is transformation — not just getting through the week, but building something lasting that positively impacts your relationships, your health, and your life.
