Gerard Long, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Gerard! I have been a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1989. I specialize in supportive and behavioral therapy with Trauma, anxiety and depression, and addiction issues. My approach I am trained in emotionally supportive psychotherapy and gentle behavioral interventions. Clients set and modify behavioral and emotional goals for therapy and I assist them in achieving their plan. My focus I work with most conditions that clients are willing to work on. My specific areas of interest and competence are trauma and domestic violence, anxiety and depression, major mental illnesses, and addiction/ recovery. My communication style Most clients would describe me as youthful and energetic (for my age). I strive for a safe supportive atmosphere for clients to explore and try new ways of achieving their goals. While supportive, I value being direct with clients when necessary to change destructive patterns. I appreciate the honest feedback as it improves the therapeutic outcome. My journey to mental healthcare I am a child of trauma and abuse. I started my training to help others in my own family. After leaving home, I struggled with ADHD and depression through alcohol and drug abuse. I went to graduate school to help others as part of my treatment plan when I was in recovery in 1987. Since then, I’ve worked with issues ranging from fine-tuning an already successful life to the most difficult life challenges. My goals for you I believe the client should direct treatment goals, and that I utilize my skill in service of those. I generally ask for a “report card” after three sessions for clients to give feedback to me on how they feel the treatment has started and if they have ideas on improving service.
