Getting to know Haoyue Yu

I’m a warm, LGBTQ+ affirmative therapist, and I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, respected, and able to explore their inner world without judgment. I work with adults navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, trauma, cultural identity, and the quiet emotional weight of trying to hold everything together on their own. I’m especially drawn to working with clients who feel overwhelmed, stuck in painful relational patterns, or somehow disconnected from themselves, even if it’s hard to put that experience into words. I’m also deeply aware of how culture, family expectations, and identity can shape the way we relate to ourselves, others, and our emotions. I earned my master’s degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from New York University, and my additional training includes CBT through the Beck Institute and IFS Level 1. I offer therapy in both English and Mandarin, and I hope to create a space where you feel safe enough to be fully human—where you can feel seen, respected, and understood.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is warm, relational, and insight-oriented. I see therapy as a space where you can slow down, feel more grounded, and begin to understand yourself with greater clarity and compassion. Rather than rushing to fix what feels painful, I work with clients to explore the deeper patterns, emotions, and survival strategies that may be shaping their current experience. I draw from IFS, attachment-based, mindfulness-based, feminist, humanistic, and CBT perspectives, depending on each client’s needs. In our work together, I pay attention to both what is happening in the present and what may be living underneath it—past relationships, internal conflicts, protective parts, and the ways you may have learned to adapt in order to cope. My style is thoughtful, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I hope therapy can be a place where you feel safe enough to be honest, curious about your inner world, and gently supported as you move toward change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My goal in a first session is to help you feel comfortable enough to begin. We’ll spend time talking about what brings you to therapy, what has been feeling difficult lately, and what you may be hoping for from the process—without any pressure to share more than you feel ready for. I also use the first session to begin understanding your history, current concerns, and the emotional or relational patterns that may be shaping your experience. If it feels helpful, we may start identifying a few initial goals together, but I see the first session primarily as a space for building trust and getting a sense of whether working together feels like a good fit. My hope is that you leave feeling a little more grounded, a little more understood, and with a clearer sense of what therapy with me might feel like.
