Getting to know Heather Gunderson

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Illinois who helps people struggling emotionally, socially, and relationally. Everyone faces challenges and conflicts in life, and it can be frustrating to know when and where to get help. I can support you through those struggles so you can create real and lasting change. I earned my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Syracuse University and have been in practice since 1995. My approach with clients is thoughtfully direct and relational. I have experience helping with anxiety, depression, divorce, self-esteem, relational issues, developmental transitions, parent-child concerns, behavior issues, and academic challenges. As a systemic therapist, I focus on both the client's needs and the dynamics of the systems they are part of to better assess and address potential issues and resolutions. Working through life's challenges can feel overwhelming. Starting counseling can be a positive first step toward changing your life. I look forward to working with you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal for working with clients is that they are able to create change in their lives for the concerns that brought them to therapy and also to understand how to apply the information to any issues that may present themselves in the future. Understanding how relational dynamics work allows each person I work with to be knowledgeable and empowered in their own lives.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

She is probably the best therapist I’ve ever had. And I have seen quite a few therapists.

My partner and I really feel Heather understands where each of us is coming from but above all, she is very insightful. She can see what we can't see and she explains what's happening in such a simple, empowering way, that you know what you need to work on to make a relationship work.
Heather is the best therapist I have ever worked with - she is a gem and has made an enormous difference in my life. I can't recommend her highly enough!
Heather is an excellent listener, and I appreciate her direct feedback during our discussions. She is extremely knowledgable and not only provides astute advice but also has recommended a few resources (books or podcasts) which have helped continue to my personal growth. Heather has a great sense of humor and is very authentic. I appreciate the opportunity each week to check in with Heather, unpack situations, digest her feedback and apply strategies she has suggested (which are helping immensely). She is a wonderful therapist!
