A therapeutic relationship is ultimately an exercise of vulnerability and trust. I opened myself up to Heather during my appointments, leaving space for her to ask active listening questions or delve with me deeper on information I divulged, but she did not. In fact, after vulnerably expressing my concerns with my body image issues/inability to view myself accurately and my complicated relationship with exercise (both admissions I had never shared with any previous therapist) - instead of working with me to address these points and their suggestion of an ED or something deeper… she instead commented that I should ‘try cardio since she sees better results that way.’ This was only one of many examples of commentary that I found not only unprofessionally dismissive, but ultimately damaging and dangerous.
