Getting to know Howard Lane

Hi there, I'm Howard! I am a highly trained, experienced drug and alcohol addictions counselor and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, specializing in treating and providing therapy for a co-occurring disorders population. I have treated clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, most with a common thread: struggles with drug/alcohol addiction and other mental health issues including sex addiction, internet addiction, pornography addiction, and compulsive gambling. I have employed evidence-based treatment modalities since 2008, many with underlying mental health concerns or diagnoses (co-occurring disorder) that have not been addressed. My work goes beyond relapse prevention and coping skills to simply “survive.” I enjoy teaching clients how to truly “live.” I utilize a systemic approach to treating addiction, including sex, pornography, internet, gambling, and video gaming addictions. I also teach family members to actively participate in their loved one's treatment and educate them using techniques to eliminate codependency and other maladaptive, dysfunctional, enabling behaviors. A common goal is to define or re-establish healthy boundaries so the entire family gets well. We learn how addiction impacts the whole family. I believe in empowering clients to find solutions and identify ways to confront obstacles hindering their recovery. As a Solution-Focused therapist, I integrate methods including CBT skills (cognitive behavioral therapy). The goal is to help clients understand cognitive distortions that cause faulty thinking and poor decision-making. I received certification from a course facilitated by Dr. Barry Gregory for DBT training. I hold a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Springfield College and a Bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University.
