Hyung Kim, MSW

Psychotherapist
CA
I work with thoughtful, high-functioning individuals who feel emotionally stuck and disconnected from their authentic selves despite insight, effort, or external success. Many are navigating trauma, attachment patterns, cultural or identity-related stress, and relationship challenges, and want more than surface-level coping. As a UPenn-educated former policymaker turned mindfulness-based psychotherapist, I too struggled with my identity, why perseverance does not always prevail, the void that comes with an achievement mindset, and what it feels like to be disconnected from our authentic self due to instilled social and cultural beliefs. Fortunately, I discovered the power of mindfulness, healing, and the equanimity that comes with reconnecting with my inner self. My mission is to bring a data-driven, evidence-informed, and personable approach to all help seekers, to provide emotional relief by addressing the root cause, because we all matter and are worthy. I believe that people desire real change. They are seeking emotional relief, self-understanding, and a deeper, more grounded connection with themselves and others. I’m especially mindful of how culture, language, and lived experience shape emotional safety and healing. We all want to journey back home to emotional safety.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer a trauma-responsive, mindfulness-based approach that blends CBT with self-compassion to help reduce anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm. With rigorous training in complex trauma, in intensive outpatient and inpatient settings, my work supports people navigating major life transitions, grief and loss, depression and everyday struggle, emotional disconnection, identity concerns, and relationship misalignments in a steady, non-judgmental, and grounding brave space. Overall, I deeply believe that therapy must facilitate real, meaningful change, not simply a temporary symptom reduction, which may demand uncomfortable yet necessary dialogue, doing the work, and being disciplined. Throughout our process, I will be your co-pilot to your vehicle toward your healing, with you being in the driver's seat, using our action plan as our roadmap, because this is your life, and you are more capable and have more power than you may realize. I am here to help you self-actualize your dormant potential, overshadowed temporarily due to your limiting circumstances, if you allow me to assist in your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I use mindfulness-based therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in sessions that are practical, structured, and collaborative. You can expect a compassionate, non-judgmental space where expectations are clear, useful coping skills are learned, and emotional safety is prioritized. You are the expert in your own life, with lived experiences, and our work moves at a pace that supports trust and growth toward your healing. Generally, in our first session, I will be a facilitator of your experiences by taking a snapshot of your life's story, relevant perspectives, and most pressing issues, to create a comprehensive clinical picture, and establish an action plan to address your concerns together, as a team.
