Getting to know Ivy Smyth

Hi there, I'm Ivy! Hello, my name is Ivy Smyth, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in California. My goal is to help clients of all ages uncover a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives while equipping them with practical skills to address anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and compulsions. I also have significant experience working with children and their families to address a variety of behavioral and relational challenges. My approach I practice client-centered talk therapy drawing from multiple orientations including existential-humanistic, cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, family systems, and narrative therapy. When working with children, I also employ expressive arts and play therapy. I pay close attention to scientific research in the mental health field; evidence-based practice is important to me. My focus I best serve adolescents and young adults working to identify what they want out of life who may be feeling lost or overwhelmed at the prospect of the future. These clients often have symptoms of anxiety and depression and may be experiencing a life transition or identity crisis. I am comfortable working with people experiencing suicidal ideation and self-harm. I also have significant experience working with parents, children, and families to address behavioral challenges and relational struggles within the family system. My communication style I try to foster a warm and casual atmosphere with clients. It is not uncommon for clients and me to share many laughs during a session. I will follow clients' lead to achieve the tone they are comfortable with in session. My journey to mental healthcare I began working as a volunteer on a suicide hotline while on a career path to becoming a high school English teacher. I came to regard these conversations with callers as sacred and observed what a difference positive human connection makes during crisis.
