Getting to know Jacob Sims

Depression. Anxiety. Relationship struggles. Low self-esteem. These are common challenges that can make life difficult and deeply impact your relationships, especially the one you have with yourself. You might feel a strong desire for change but be uncertain about where to begin. Together, we’ll explore how you’ve arrived at this point and work toward uncovering the path to where you want to be. Sometimes, facing difficult emotions and thoughts alone can feel overwhelming. That’s where I come in. With a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, my approach centers on building a trusting relationship where we can explore what’s really going on beneath the surface. We’ll work to understand what brought you here and help you move toward a stronger, more authentic version of yourself. I understand how overwhelming life can feel when anxiety, self-doubt, or relationship struggles take over. You don’t have to face it alone. Together, we’ll explore what’s holding you back and work toward healing and growth. Taking the first step is an act of courage, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is a collaborative process—one that invites curiosity, honesty, and compassion. I work from a psychodynamic and relational foundation, which means we’ll explore how your experiences, especially in early relationships, continue to shape the way you experience yourself and others today. The patterns you find yourself stuck in, whether it’s emotional withdrawal, perfectionism, conflict avoidance, or self-criticism, often have deep roots. Together, we’ll begin to understand where these patterns come from and why they’ve made sense, so that you can develop more freedom and choice in how you move through life. Relational psychotherapy brings a unique dimension to this work: it recognizes that healing happens not just through insight, but through real connection. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a space where new patterns can emerge, where you can feel seen, supported, and even challenged in ways that promote growth. We'll pay attention to what happens between us in session, using the relationship as a lens to better understand your relationships outside of therapy. In addition to these depth-oriented approaches, I integrate contemplative practices such as Buddhism. These offer a gentle but powerful way of learning to be with your experience, rather than against it. We may explore how to stay present with difficult emotions, how to bring awareness to the body and breath, or how to meet yourself with compassion instead of judgment. In practice, therapy with me can include anything from unpacking a painful memory, to sitting in silence with a difficult feeling, to exploring a dynamic that just showed up between us in the room. This work isn't about fixing you, but about understanding you more fully, with kindness and honesty. Over time, this process can lead to greater self-awareness, stronger relationships, and a more grounded sense of who you are.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start by creating a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can explore what’s bringing you in. Early sessions focus on understanding your current struggles, personal history, and relational patterns. As we build trust, we’ll begin to explore how past experiences and unconscious dynamics shape your present. I draw from psychodynamic and relational approaches, while integrating mindfulness and contemplative practices to help you develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and more authentic ways of relating—to yourself and others.
