Getting to know Jason McDermott

About Jason McDermott, LPC Licensed Professional Counselor | Trauma, EMDR, & Narcissistic Relationship Recovery If you grew up with emotionally immature or narcissistic parents—or find yourself repeating painful patterns in toxic relationships—I can help you break free and rediscover your sense of self. My clients are adults recovering from complex trauma (CPTSD), anxiety, depression, addiction, or codependent relationship patterns who are ready to understand the “why” behind their struggles and build healthier, more authentic lives. As a therapist trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and trauma-informed care, I specialize in helping individuals process the effects of emotional neglect, narcissistic abuse, and early attachment wounds. Together, we’ll uncover how these experiences have shaped your beliefs and behaviors and replace survival-based coping mechanisms with grounded, sustainable ones that support confidence, balance, and connection. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University, a Bachelor’s from DePaul University, and a Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language from Alliant International University. My approach is warm, collaborative, and integrative, blending EMDR, relational, attachment-based, and cognitive-behavioral methods to foster genuine healing and resilience. I offer both individual and group therapy to help clients develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and self-worth. Healing from trauma or narcissistic relationships takes courage—and seeking help is a brave first step. You don’t have to face this journey alone. Together, we can build a path toward a more authentic, grounded, and fulfilling life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first step is a brief consultation to make sure we’re a good fit. From there, we’ll collaborate on clear goals for therapy and begin exploring what’s most present for you—whether it’s anxiety, relationship patterns, or past experiences that still influence your life today. My approach is active, compassionate, and grounded in evidence-based methods like EMDR, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and attachment-focused work. Early sessions focus on building safety and trust, while later sessions help you integrate insight into lasting change. You can expect our work to be collaborative and goal-oriented. Between sessions, I may suggest practical exercises—like journaling prompts, reflection questions, or small behavioral experiments—to help you apply what we discuss in real life. These assignments aren’t “homework” in the traditional sense; they’re tools designed to help you strengthen self-awareness and see progress beyond the session. Over time, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the patterns that no longer serve you, developing healthier ways to think, respond, and connect—with yourself and others.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each session begins with a brief check-in on your progress and any insights or challenges since we last met. We’ll revisit themes from previous sessions to stay grounded in your goals and ensure we’re moving in the right direction. From there, we’ll continue working toward your therapeutic goals—processing what’s most relevant in your life and exploring how current experiences connect to underlying patterns or past events. We’ll also review any between-session exercises or EMDR work (if applicable) to help reinforce growth outside the therapy room. This process is flexible and collaborative. As your self-awareness deepens, we’ll adjust your goals together to keep therapy meaningful and aligned with your evolving needs. The aim is steady, lasting progress that helps you feel more empowered, centered, and capable in your daily life.

I've seen Jason now a couple of times, but I am incredibly grateful for his support. He is such a great listener, gives me his full attention and makes me feel truly heard. One of the things I appreciate most about Jason is his calm demeanor. He is not loud, which creates a peaceful and comfortable environment for our sessions. He is incredibly patient, allowing me to take my time to express my thoughts and feelings without feeling rushed. It’s been only a couple of sessions, but sessions with Jason have been very helpful. Highly recommend.
It was a relief finding Jason. As a man it has been challenging finding a male therapist that I could feel comfortable speaking to about issues I would not feel as comfortable sharing with a female therapist. He is calm, understanding and has a reassuring attitude towards addressing the many layers of trauma. I am grateful for his knowledge and experience and continue to gain a better understanding of how I can move beyond the challenges I experienced over the years. I am confident things will continue to improve as I work with Jason.
Jason is a fabulous therepist. He is kind, helpful and easy to talk to. From the start, I felt comfortable opening up to him. If you're looking for a therapist who truly cares and helps you make real progress, I highly recommend him!
