“Jay is the best! I had the pleasure of working with him weekly for the past year and some. He was understanding, flexible, and empathetic. He made me feel comfortable and like I could discuss anything and everything. The techniques he taught me changed how I think about my relationships and myself as well as the way I communicate. I will be forever grateful and I can not recommend him enough. Thank you, Jay!! ”

Getting to know Jay Varela

I work with high-functioning adults who look like they have it together and are quietly running on empty—people whose competence has become the thing they hide behind. If you hold yourself to standards nobody else could meet, feel like your worth has to be earned, and can't tell the difference between your accomplishments and your okay-ness, we'll likely work well together. My foundation is TEAM-CBT, an evidence-based approach I'm certified in at the highest level (Level 3 Advanced), and I train regularly with both the Feeling Good Institute and the Beck Institute. It gives our work real structure and proven tools. But symptoms usually rest on something older—beliefs about what you have to be to be worth something, patterns in how you relate, things you've learned to think your way around instead of feel. So we don't stop at coping strategies. We work toward what's underneath. I start by understanding before reaching for technique. A lot of people have done therapy that managed the surface without ever reaching what was driving them—so we work at both levels, and you'll be met directly, not managed. I work most with anxiety, perfectionism, conditional self-worth, and the depletion that hides underneath a successful life. Telehealth across VA, FL, and TX.
