“Jena has been an instrumental partner in my son’s mental health recovery. I no longer feel as though I’m carrying the burden of his struggles on my (non-expert) shoulders alone—I have a partner and my son has someone he trusts and relies on. Jena is always available to us—she fits in emergency appointments when needed, responds to an email about a concern I have, and always eases concerns with factual medical information and data, explaining what’s happening and then helping us come up with an action plan to move forward. She role plays with my son and teaches him real skills he can use in everyday life—meeting him where he is as an 11-year old. I don’t know what we’d do without her and I am thankful everyday we have her as our partner! ”

Getting to know Jena Griffin

I have worked on the child side of school anxiety and school refusal, and I am now ready to help empower parents and caretakers to support their children at home and understand how to advocate for them at school. Jena specializes in working with children and adolescents to address school refusal and anxiety. With a background in elementary and special education, she earned her Master's in Social Work from DePaul University to deepen her clinical understanding of anxiety's impact in the school environment. Jena's experience as a teacher, clinical therapist, and education specialist gives her comprehensive knowledge of school refusal from an academic perspective.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am trained and confident in Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Play Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and Exposure Response Therapy. I specialize in School Anxiety/Avoidance as well as mood and anxiety disorders. I also specialize in working with individuals who struggle with anxiety around chronic health conditions. Clients can expect to feel heard, validated, empowered, and educated. I love to bring humor, kindness, and realism into my sessions with children and adolescents. It is important for them to have a say and choice in their actions with realistic and wholesome guidance!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every client's treatment is tailored specifically to their needs. My diverse approach is not a one size fits all. I believe in a collaborative approach for children and adolescents whether that is working with their parents, schools, any other outside providers to make sure their care is wholesome. I practice talk therapy as well an integrating games, play, art, and other modalities to engage clients and create a safe place for them to share and grow. I also use strengths-based and solution-focused practices with young adults to strengthen their empowerment.

Jena was so great! She really understood my daughter and got down to her level to support their connection!
Jena has been an instrumental partner in my son’s mental health recovery. My child recently had a remarkably positive visit with their school refusal therapist. From the moment we arrived, the therapist's warm and welcoming demeanor put both of us at ease. During the session, the therapist used engaging and age-appropriate techniques to connect with my child, fostering an environment of trust and openness. They actively listened to my child's concerns, validating their feelings and providing practical strategies to manage anxiety and fear related to school. One of the most encouraging aspects of the visit was the therapist's ability to instill a sense of empowerment in my child. They worked collaboratively to set small, achievable goals, which helped my child feel more in control of the situation. By the end of the session, my child was more relaxed and even expressed a sense of optimism about returning to school. This positive experience has given us hope and confidence in the journey ahead, and we are grateful for the therapist's compassionate approach.
Jena did wonders with my daughter regarding her anxiety around going to school. I feel my daughter is more equipped to handle 7th grade this upcoming year. Jena also coordinated with the school social worker to let them know how to support Mia.
Jena and Nicole worked together in order to service our family best! Jena worked with our son and Nicole worked with my husband and I on how to manage very difficult behaviors and emotions within the household. We are so lucky to have found PFect!
Jena continues to do a great job with our 15 year old daughter that has struggled with bullying and being judged by other in high school. They have a great rapport and our daughter loves going each week!
I have worked with Jena and Nicole for several years and can't say enough about this dynamic duo! They are patient, excellent listeners and really take into account a family and/or patient's comprehensive background to guide families into making choices that work for their family unit. Their specialty in helping students return to school and encouraging family behaviors to help the child is demonstrated through their encouraging words, establishing routines and focusing on family communication.
