Getting to know Jenay Garrett

Greetings! First, I want to commend you for taking this major step. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with 13 years of professional experience in mental health and human services. I hold a PhD in Human and Social Services from Walden University, an MEd in Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University, and a Bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University. It is my belief that we all have experiences in life that can cause us to feel angry, nervous, ashamed, hurt, disappointed, confused, or unbalanced, just to name a few emotions. Through my years of experience, I have learned that unresolved experiences can negatively impact how a person views themselves, their life, and their support system. My mission as a counselor is to “help others journey to peace” by providing a space where you can explore and process the necessary topics. I specialize in helping clients who experience various forms of trauma, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. Additionally, I have experience addressing stress, lack of motivation, grief and loss, and relationship challenges. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. I utilize an integrated approach that includes EMDR, CBT, Trauma-Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT skills, and Feminist Theory to help clients process their emotions in a healthy manner. I hope our work together will help you develop new ways to cope with stressors and triggers. I provide individual and group counseling services for individuals ages 13 and up. So, if you are struggling with depression, anger management, relationship problems, anxiety, trauma, or life changes, I would love to help you work through this season of your life. Taking the first step and signing up for therapy takes courage, and I look forward to supporting you on this journey!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Building a sound therapeutic relationship with my clients is very important to me. During the first session, you can expect to learn a little more about my professional experience and counseling style, as well as provide me with some important background information about yourself. Within my sessions, I try to make the environment comfortable for my client's by using humor when appropriate, listening, support, encouraging, and validating. It is important to me to ensure that my clients end each session in a calm space and with a plan to help manage their symptoms between sessions. At times, I assign between session (work when appropriate) to assist with effective processing of experiences. I believe that my role is to help my client's make connections while increasing self-awareness.

In-network insurances

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
