Getting to know Jessica Guerrero

I am Dr. Jessica Guerrero, DSW, LCSW, a first-generation Mexican American. My passion is to get people to begin talking about mental health and step away from the stigma that those words bring. I work with families, individuals, and couples. Most of my experience in mental health has been with children, teens, and families. I earned my Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California and my Master's in Social Work from California State University, Long Beach. These educational experiences have deepened my commitment to supporting clients through meaningful therapeutic work. My approach to therapy is person-focused. It is a collaboration between the individual(s) and me. I use various modalities to fit the needs of the individual or couple. My “ideal client” is someone ready to work on their goals, put in effort between sessions, and be able to share what is working and what is not. I am transparent and will use various modalities to support each client; however, if the client is expecting overnight change, it may be time to reassess the needs and realistic expectations. I am collaborative in communication. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment with active listening to ensure each client has a comfortable encounter and feels free to share thoughts however they see fit. I was first drawn to therapy while working at a non-public school that provided therapeutic services. I supported Spanish-speaking parents through interpretation when engaging in family therapy with their children. My desire to be in the helping field grew as I worked in a community-based mental health agency in an intensive program that provided in-home therapeutic services. I then pursued further education to directly support the progress of each child, teen, and family. Therapeutic goals are established together. These are realistic goals that support the growth and symptom management of the client.
