Getting to know Dr. Jim (Patrick) Harris

Starting therapy can feel like a big, sometimes overwhelming step, but it’s also one of the bravest and most meaningful choices you can make. At the heart of it all is one thing: finding a therapist you genuinely feel comfortable with. Someone you trust. Someone who gets you. Research backs this up, the connection you build with your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of real progress. It’s not just about techniques or titles; it's about whether the person sitting across from you feels like the right match. Without that sense of trust and connection, it’s hard to move forward in a way that feels authentic or lasting. I’ve spent over a decade in the mental health field, working across a wide range of settings from inpatient psych hosptials, crisis hotlines, private practice, and community clinics. I hold a BA in Psychology and Religious Studies, an MA in Counseling, and a PhD in Mind Body Medicine with an emphasis in integrated mental health. I also had the privilege of completing advanced training in Mind Body Medicine at Harvard Medical School under Dr. Herbert Benson, who helped shape the field. These days, my work brings together clinical care, education, and advocacy. Alongside providing therapy, I train psychiatric nurse practitioner students, teach undergraduate psychology at Texas State University, and lead graduate counseling courses at St. Edward’s University. I also serve on the board of directors for the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor, and I’m honored to be the chief operating officer for Dr. Patch Adams’ Gesundheit Institute, a role that reflects my deep belief in healing through compassion, connection, and humor. If any of this resonates with you, I’d love to invite you to keep reading. Below, I’ll share more about how I work, and how we might create a space that feels safe, collaborative, and uniquely tailored to you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I bring a spirit of genuine curiosity and deep respect into every session, with a strong focus on person centered care. While I draw from years of clinical training, I fully believe that you are the expert on your own life. That means we’ll work together to shape an approach that reflects your unique strengths, needs, and goals, so the tools we use are not only effective, but truly meaningful to you. My work is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness based CBT, both of which help us explore how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected, and where small shifts can create lasting change. But therapy isn’t just about reducing distress, it's also about helping you build a life that feels rich, balanced, and aligned with what matters most to you. We’ll explore what brings you energy, what helps you feel grounded, and what gives your life a sense of purpose. Whether it's connection with others, creative pursuits, or discovering a deeper sense of meaning, our goal is not only to ease the pain, but to expand the joy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every therapist brings their own flavor to the work, so here’s mine. I know how strange it can feel to open up to someone you’ve just met, especially in a structured setting where the focus is on your most vulnerable thoughts and feelings. That’s why I approach therapy with patience, care, and a strong focus on building trust from the very beginning. In those early sessions, we won’t just zero in on what’s feeling hard right now, instead we’ll take time to get a fuller picture of you. We’ll look at what’s been going on, what you’ve already tried, and what’s helped or not helped in the past. Just as importantly, I want to learn about the parts of your life that bring color and meaning: your interests, values, routines, relationships, and the things that make you feel like yourself. I truly believe therapy works best when you feel safe, seen, and understood. Once we’ve built that foundation, we’ll move into the deeper work, making sense of your experiences, identifying patterns, and developing strategies that support real and lasting change. Therapy is a journey, but it doesn’t have to feel like climbing a mountain. We’ll go at your pace, and together we’ll create a space that feels grounded, collaborative, and genuinely helpful.

i wish i could give this provider a fair evaluation, but unfortunately, i can't since they never showed up to our appointment or canceled it ahead of time. when another provider on zocdoc realized i needed in-person services vs. telehealth, they called to cancel and called again to see if i was interested in rescheduling after their practice opened again. maybe this provider isn't fully aware of the appointments booked through zocdoc, or perhaps they're just not great at keeping track of their time. either way, this was an unfortunate waste of mine.
