Getting to know Joann Carter

Welcome to a safe place to start your therapy journey. You are the main character in the story—the expert on your own life and the one who has to do the heavy lifting, but sometimes we all could use some support, some shoring up if you will, and a guide to help us find our way, discover new possibilities, and change direction. I specialize in working with individuals navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief and trauma. I take a client-centered, collaborative approach to therapy, tailoring each session to your unique needs and goals. I'd like to help navigate the way to a healthier you and would be honored to hear your story. My approach I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy as the groundwork for making change, but I consider myself eclectic as each individual, family, and situation is highly unique. My background in social work has allowed me to view the person in the whole system of their lives and assist individuals in dealing with mental health struggles as well as attaining emotional wellness. I provide psychotherapy, parent training, and self-development services for adults, adolescents, and children. My focus I work with children, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma. However, within these broad subject matters, I have taken postgraduate continuing education and have studied literature in the following areas: Mindfulness, Complicated Grief (Columbia University), Anxiety and Food Allergy, and Depression due to chronic illness. With this additional training and years of experience, I will work with you to create a safe plan for growth that feels empowering and individualized. My communication style Clear, open communication in a non-judgmental environment is a key success factor towards meeting a client's goals. I practice active listening and will give you opportunities to reflect on your experiences with you as an empathetic partner.
