Psychotherapist
MD
Hi there, I'm Joanne! Welcome to your journey to freedom. When you reach out for therapy, it is a brave step. It takes courage and strength that you might not think you have. I'm Dr. Joanne Vizzini, called Dr. V. I hold a PhD and a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Loyola College. I am a licensed LCPC. I am a therapist because I find awe and joy in the healing along the way-every step counts. My approach I have a strong background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I like to mix in Adlerian and Gestalt therapy. The first deals with your perception of early life relationships. The second allows you space to free yourself from binding thoughts or feelings. Then there is Positive Psychology to find your joy. My focus My caseload has been people ages 5 to 95. The focus of treatment is YOU. I work with trauma, co-dependency, anxiety (OCD, PTSD, C-PTSD), strengthening recovery, separation and divorce, spiritual issues, LD/ADD, and general mental health. YOU are not your symptoms or their title. My communication style When working with me, I deeply listen as I make eye contact unless you are uncomfortable. I face you, attentive, not judging or distracted. I imagine working with me feels safe. That is what my clients have told me. As we build rapport, I become more dynamic and creative with therapy choices (Creative Arts, Dramatic Role Play, Music, Movement) and tools (EMDR, ACT, DBT, EFT [acupressure], meditation). My journey to mental healthcare My religious community mandated I achieve my Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health. In my second year, I took a leave from a religious lifestyle (26 years ago) to discern my future. My therapy then was stellar, revealing the control and emotional depravity of my group. Leaving was like a divorce. I grieved what I thought I could have had and faced the painful lifestyle, trading it for one with a balance of ups and downs.
