Hi I’m Jon Poindexter. I am an artist and a healer. I have 34 years of experience as a Life Coach. When I started, in 1992 my primary tools were TaroT and African American Divination. In 1995 I incorporated a Master Teacher Degree in Reiki Siechim into my practice as I developed Spirit, Mind, Body (SMB) Therapy as an approach to healing. In 2002 I earned the certification of Practioner of Tradtional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at The Norwegian School for Traditional Acupunture (NOSTRA,) with pre medical studies completed at Atlantis Medical College, both in Oslo, Norway. I rounded out my practice in 2011 by completing a Masters in Professional Psychology at Roosevelt University in Chicago. I am now currenttly a Licenced Clincal Professional Counselor in Illinois. During the time from 2011 to 2013 I logged over 400 hours of yoga instruction in Oslo. From 2017 to 2018 I tought classes again. The formal classes have now started again in 2024 and are currently running. I have lived in Norway, Germany, England and India for signifcant amounts of time. I put myself through med school working as an artist. I bring this experience into the therapy space with us to provide worldly, down to earth, empathetic space, especially for marginalized and targeted communities. This includes POC, LGBTQAII+, unhoused persons, and persons with disabilities. This practice and myself as a therapist DOES NOT EXCLUDE; All are Welcome.

What should a new client know about working with you?

One fo the firs things we learned in the MA program is that the mode number of sessions for a therapy patient is ONE. So in my view, on the first session, even if we’re not a good fit, I’d like You to walk away with something. You come to me seeking answers or, in the very least, a take on things. I am privilaged to be a part of that journey as You find those answers. We will find those answers together. In the first 3 -5 follow up sessions I’ll do a lot of listening. It’s about You telling Your story, Your feelings, Your emotions, what sucks, what works; what You think and feel about it. I’ll listen, and if it's cool throw in 2 cents here and there. At some point in those 3-5 sessions, I’ll give You my asessment and we talk about what that means. And what we can do about it. And what You can do about it. By the 3-5th session, we'll have an idea of what we wanna do next. Maybe its all good right there. Maybe we wanna continue, check in later at some point. I’ll be around if You need me.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) based. We use CBT to "get You out of trouble*. " Then we can further explore through Existential, Jungian, and other eclectic techniques. I can also offer supportive therapies to people who need ancillary services to their primary care. For example - people in recovery, - people who need supportive therapy for complex diagnosis, - people who have a primary therapist on leave with the intention of returning to that therapist - people in group, partner or family therapy who seek their own therapist - partners or people in relationships who seek a therapist together …just ask and let’s see what we can do. I offer in person, remote and combination therapies. Stay tuned; there will soon be limited avaiblity of in person sessions in different states. *Trauma based strategies can incorporate EMDR informed and Existential Therapies. Family and Partner therapies can also incorporate Person Centered Therapy.
