Joseph Dobbins, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CT
My clients are people who need an ally navigating emotional & behavioral challenges that feel difficult to manage on their own. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, family conflict, behavioral concerns, or simply feeling stuck in patterns that are not working. Many folks I work with are looking for practical strategies & genuine support, someone to talk to, yet also a collaborative partner who helps them build real skills & move toward the life they want. My aim is to follow my clients lead as the experts in their life to identify their strengths, clarify their goals, then take concrete steps forward. I use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as my primary approaches, drawing on whichever best fits your needs and goals on your journey. Both are structured, evidence-based, and oriented toward practical results. You will leave sessions with tools you can actually use or a plan of what to monitor or research for your next steps.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe every person already holds the capacity for change — sometimes they just need the right support to access it. I do not see my role as the expert in the room. You are the expert on your own life, and my job is to follow your lead, help you identify what is already working, and build from there. I also believe that therapy should feel like a genuine partnership. That means being honest with you, celebrating real progress, and adjusting course when something is not working. Whether you are an adolescent navigating a difficult season, an adult carrying something long unaddressed, or a family trying to find a better way forward together — you deserve support that meets you where you are.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 15 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, and families across Connecticut. My clinical work is grounded in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — both practical, evidence-based approaches that focus on building real skills and measurable progress rather than just talking about problems.
