Joseph Fincher, LPC Associate

Psychotherapist
516 Sul Ross St, Houston, TX
I am an LPC-Associate, under the supervision of Noel C. Gonzalez, PhD, LPC-Supervisor. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Texas Southern University. Prior to my final year of study (2010–2023), I served the Baytown and Houston communities as an educator, helping students focus on and improve their English Language Arts and Reading skills. This experience provided me with a wealth of knowledge in working with youth and serving as a teacher, mentor, and guide through many of the struggles that come with adolescence. My focus is on working with clients who are experiencing trauma as a result of the challenges life can throw at us. Areas of specialty include accidents, cancer, LGBTQIA+ issues, and HIV; however, these are not the only areas of mental health that I can help with. I also work with clients with ADHD, anxiety, and depression, including generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and major depressive disorder (episodic or chronic), as well as men’s issues. My primary treatment modalities are mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, Sandtray therapy, Reiki, and walk-and-talk therapy, all rooted in an existential theoretical approach. During our first session, we will discuss what brought you to therapy and set a plan for how you want to proceed. This may include one or a combination of the types of therapy that I offer. We will tailor our time to suit your needs. I work with clients ages 15 through end of life. I believe that each of us deserves a chance at finding balance within our lives. This may include counseling over the long term or the occasional “reset” session. I am here to serve and help you find that balance so you can pursue life on your own terms and become the best “you” that you can be.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work to provide a safe, welcoming environment in which you feel comfortable in talking about and working through those issues that bring you into therapy. I strive to provide a place where all are welcome, no matter how they identify. Whether we are working through school or work related anxiety or working through the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis, my goal is to ensure that you are aware that you are not along on the to healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin with our consultation call. This will be when we can ask each other questions to make sure we are a good fit for one another. I will also get to know a bit about what brings you into therapy. From here, we complete the intake process, which involves me sending you some forms and a few assessments to give us a baseline. We will go over these forms and assessments during our first session. Next, we will discuss a treatment plan and how we might work together to achieve our goals in the therapeutic relationship. After this, we set up follow-up sessions and begin the work of helping you along your healing journey. The timeline for care depends on the needs we are working with, and varies from person-to-person.
