Getting to know Joseph Illovsky

Most of us have faced difficulties in our lives. I, too, have experienced many. At the time, I have asked myself, "Why this? Why me? Why now?" I have come to realize that all these experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today and have made me a better therapist, enabling me to help others. My experiences as a male, Hispanic, Caucasian, gay individual in recovery-with over 16 years of continuous sobriety-and working through my own issues in personal therapy have allowed me to be more aware of and sensitive to the unique circumstances my clients may be facing. I hold a Master's in Social Work from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, which has further equipped me to support my clients effectively. My goal is to be obsolete in your life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I take a person centered approach to therapy. Most of my clients would say working with me, is like talking and working with a trusted, honest friend. I try to keep the session warm, safe and relevant to that individual I’m working with. This is a normal experience in the therapeutic process. Know, that I’m direct, non-judgmental, gentle, and honest. It’s important for you to be honest in your sessions. Please be assured that your situation, and information will be kept in complete confidence, and treated with sensitivity, respect and care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each person has unique circumstances, experiences, and perspectives. I pride myself in viewing each person, and session in their uniqueness, and focus on the issue at hand, discovering and utilizing your strengths, supporting weakness’ and helping you determine the best options for yourself. There are some sessions which you will find very rewarding, and other’s that you will find very difficult and painful. This is part of the therapeutic process. It’s important that you continue through the difficult sessions, as well as the wonderful ones to achieve the outcome that you desire, and that is the best for you, as decided by you. In all sessions, I’m profession, direct yet gentle, honest. I work hard to ensure that you are treated with warmth and respect. Most tell me a session is like speaking with a good friend. I look forward to be entrusted in serving you, and helping you with the circumstances and issues, which you are addressing.

I immediately felt welcome and safe. I have faith that I can tell him anything and it will be received without judgment. As I am a gay man it’s imperative that I am afforded the space to process certain aspects of my lifestyle and the highs and lows, ins and outs of what my lifestyle brings me. I can speak of how my higher power is showing up for me in my life today and conversely discuss the pain of feeling betrayed by the universe as well. This clinician is exactly what I was looking for and although I have a high deductible, it’s totally worth coming out of pocket for regular sessions.

I have to say, i’m not crazy about Therapist. Most sit there and listen and that’s all they do. That was not the case with Mr. llovsky he was very sweet, caring and most importantly gave input, which I find extremely important.
