Joseph Lynch, LCSW

Joseph Lynch, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Virginia with a Master's in Social Work from the University of Maryland. I provide individual and couples' therapy and have been in practice for 45 years. Yes, that means I am old-I am 70 years old. For some, that is an automatic “not interested.” For others, it's worth checking this person out. I bring a wealth of life experience. I have three children: one biological daughter, one stepson, and one adopted son. This means I have experience as a biological parent, a stepparent, and an adoptive parent. These three types of parenting share some similarities but also important differences. Professionally, I have worked in a public mental health center, solo private practice, and a group private practice that I started with seven other therapists. I have also served on several nonprofit boards, including the Virginia Board of Social Work (the licensing authority for social workers in Virginia), the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Human Services State Human Rights Committee, and I currently serve as Vice President on the board of the Virginia Society for Clinical Social Workers.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Expectations are really important. I have found that many relationships run into difficulty due to some unspoken expectation not being met. Sometimes it is hard for folks to state their expectations directly. In my work with clients initially I need to find out from you what you want to gain from therapy. I will ask questions about you, your family, your relationships with other people, how you usually do problem solving, and how do you usually express emotions. You can expect me to be conducting an assessment of your issues. This happens initially and is an ongoing part of therapy. By the time someone seeks out a therapist, they have already tried multiple ways to deal with their issues. I don't want to do things that you already know don'work for you.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
