Joshua Kaplan, LCSW

Joshua Kaplan, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CO
As a specialist, I focus my expertise on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, and Phobias. This specialization sets me apart from generalist therapists who might treat a broad range of disorders but may not possess the same depth of knowledge and expertise in any one area. Think of it like the distinction between a general practitioner and an orthopedic specialist in medicine. While a general practitioner is skilled in addressing a wide array of health concerns, an orthopedic specialist has dedicated years to mastering the complexities of the musculoskeletal system. Similarly, my specialization ensures that you receive care that is not just competent, but exceptionally attuned to the nuances of your specific condition. I earned my Master's in Social Work from the University of Denver, which provided a strong foundation for my focused clinical practice.

What should a new client know about working with you?

OCD and anxiety manifest in diverse ways, impacting each individual uniquely. There is no one-size-fits-all when talking about these disorders. For some, it's a relentless cycle of intrusive thoughts and fears, while for others, it's a sudden onset of panic and fear that engulfs their entire being. And still, for others, it’s an experience involving a continuous loop of worries and rumination. Regardless of the specific symptoms, a common shared experience among those grappling with OCD and anxiety is a profound sense of feeling trapped and scared, held hostage by seemingly endless or unpredictable storms. This is often compounded by uncertainty about where to seek help and what effective help actually looks like. Perhaps you've come across this site because you're personally navigating the challenges of anxiety, or maybe you're here out of concern for a friend or loved one who is struggling. Regardless of what brought you here, the most important takeaway is that there is hope and a path forward out of the storm. I started CBT 4 Anxiety with a clear mission: to provide effective, evidence-based online treatment for OCD and anxiety. With over 10 years of specialization in this field and extensive training, my approach is rooted in the most reliable and proven methods. At CBT 4 Anxiety, we use these evidence-based treatments as a guiding lighthouse, helping you navigate out of the storm of anxiety and towards a life marked by peace and calm. Here, you're not just finding a treatment; you're embarking on a journey to reclaim a sense of tranquility and control in your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Thankfully there are evidence-based treatments for OCD and Anxiety. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered to be the gold standard in OCD treatment. It's a very specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that focuses on the gradual systematic exposure to OCD triggers and the reduction and prevention of ongoing compulsions. This is all done under the guidance of a trained OCD therapist. ERP is extremely effective with success rates of greater than 70%. Even better, ERP tends to work quickly, with most individuals requiring only 10-20 sessions. Treating anxiety disorders often involves a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and exposure techniques, an approach rooted in gradually facing and gaining control over the anxiety-provoking situation or thought pattern. CBT helps in identifying and challenging the irrational beliefs and negative thought patterns that fuel anxiety, teaching individuals to react to their anxiety triggers with healthier, more constructive responses. Concurrently, exposure therapy gently guides individuals to confront their fears in a controlled and safe environment, diminishing the power those fears hold over time. This dual approach can reduce the avoidance behaviors central to anxiety disorders and empower patients with practical skills and coping mechanisms for managing anxiety symptoms. Through consistent practice and guidance, individuals can achieve significant improvements in their daily functioning and overall well-being.
