Psychotherapist
CA
My name is Juan, and I'm an expat psychotherapist with over 15 years of experience, primarily using IFS therapy informed by CBT. I hold a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies. I'm passionate about helping my clients overcome anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, and to live more fulfilling lives. IFS therapy is a powerful approach that helps you understand and relate to the different parts of yourself with compassion. CBT is a practical approach that helps you identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. Both IFS therapy and CBT are effective treatments for anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. IFS therapy can help you identify and heal the underlying causes of your problems, while CBT can help you learn new coping skills and manage your symptoms more effectively. I'm here to help you navigate the challenges of difficult transitions in life and thrive. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or culture shock, I can help you find the inner strength and resources you need to overcome your challenges and live a happier, more fulfilling life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is person-centered. I'll create a space where you can feel safe to open up and trust our collaborative work. I bring a calm focus to the therapy process and remain goal-oriented. I use CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) & Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) to help you unlock your inner resources using powerful tools such as mindfulness and self-compassion. I believe that healing can only occur when we look at ourselves with compassion and clarity. While learning coping skills is helpful and often necessary, the flexibility and frustration tolerance that every life requires is only achievable by learning to let go of the internal struggles and self-criticism. That is why I was drawn to IFS, an approach that offers concrete tools to bring about healing using self-compassion. In IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy) we have a saying “there are no bad parts” to mean that even our inner critic is a well-meaning part that has become stuck in this role, without realizing that criticism hurts more than helps. Let me help you change how you relate to these different parts of you and stop fighting yourself. Using IFS I will help you recognize the parts of you associated with your anxiety and how to help them. You will learn how to bring compassion and understanding to those anxious parts. As you develop compassion for your anxious parts, you can start to reclaim your Self leadership. This means becoming more aware and upset by your anxious parts. It also means making choices that are aligned with your values instead of based on your anxiety.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My therapeutic approach is goal-oriented and based on fostering compassionate self-awareness. Together, we'll collaborate on setting clear goals. I'll offer valuable feedback and guidance tailored to support your unique healing journey. You can schedule an initial free consultation where you can tell me about your needs and we will have the chance to decided if I am the best person to help you. On your first session, we will review some of the information that you will have provided, discuss any concerns, and start working on assessing your goals as well as your plan of care. Let's work together to help you achieve the positive changes you seek.
