“I have seen many therapists in my life but Julia is simply the best! She provides a kind listening ear and gently guides me through my generalized anxiety. I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress in our work together in that regard. She was also super helpful when I was having relationship woes, allowing me to be confident in the decision I made. Above all, being Julia’s client has allowed me to better listen to my own feelings and to be comfortable in my own skin. 10/10 would recommended. ”

Getting to know Julia McGrath

Hi, I’m Julia! (she/her) I help people build a kinder relationship with themselves and others. Can you relate? You tend to be very hard on yourself. You’ve been told you’re “too sensitive” and find yourself shutting down because of it. Your relationships feel stuck or frustrating. You’re experiencing some life transitions, bringing up grief and confusion. Maybe you want to build a family, but it feels like it won’t be possible. Maybe you’re trying to conceive or are pregnant, and finding it lonely and scary. Regardless, you’re curious to start feeling through past hurts and family hang-ups, and to stop intergenerational cycles of poor boundaries, communication, and more… We’ll work together to develop insight into how your personal history, identity, trauma, family, and relationships shape your experience. You’ll learn how to identify and honor your needs throughout life’s challenges. Your relationships with others become more satisfying as a result of your improved relationship with yourself. Starting therapy can feel like a leap into the unknown. I know how it can feel safer to keep it moving, so know you are so brave to seek support. It would be my privilege to work with you. I hold a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Drexel University and created Aligned Life Therapy to help people heal, find peace, and live a life they love. I emphasize self-compassion as a foundation of my practice because I personally know the transformational power of radical kindness. I am passionate about giving you the non-judgmental support you need, laughing together along the way, and helping to point out your strengths to live a life aligned with what really matters.

What should a new client know about working with you?

*IMPORTANT* please be aware that I only accept QUEST insurance. My non-QUEST clients pay for each session out-of-pocket, and some are eligible for reimbursement from their insurance company. PPO and POS plans are the most likely to include out-of-network benefits. There are no guarantees that you will be reimbursed. I recommend calling your insurance provider BEFORE booking. Thank you! Working together, you will find a curious and empathic listening ear and an authentic, down-to-earth partner on your therapy goals. I work through a trauma-informed, compassionate and social justice-informed lens. My practice is affirming of all intersecting identities and I work collaboratively with clients to make sense of the bigger picture. As a marriage and family therapist by training, I am especially interested in how your experiences growing up in your family and your many points of identity have shaped you. In my work, I draw from evidence-based modalities such as acceptance and commitment therapy, IFS, narrative therapy and compassion focused therapies to help you move toward a more fulfilling life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first few weeks of therapy, I want to get to know you, and I mean really get to know you. We will start by gathering a lot of information, about what you are experiencing now, your circumstances, your family and your life history. Once I have a well developed picture of what’s going on, and how the past has shaped you, and what you’d love to get out of therapy, we will choose goals that fit into your life. Each week, we will use our time to build awareness and skills to respond to what your emotions and need effectiviely. We will look at how we can make small changes that connect you to your goals.

Therapy is a substantial investment in your time, resources and emotions. It is very important to consider these elements and work towards finding a sustainable and good fit. Please call your insurance provider to find out your unique plan's benefit before booking. My fee is $155 per session and is collected through a secure client portal. I am not in-network with any insurance plan. If you have a PPO or POS insurance plan, you may be eligible for out-of-network coverage for therapy sessions. If you have these benefits, you will pay my full fee at the end of each session. At the end of each month I will provide you with a receipt for you to submit for potential reimbursement. Your insurance company will mail you a check that will offset your out-of-pocket cost partially or fully. I hold a limited number of sliding scale spaces on my caseload as part of my commitment to enhancing access to therapy. I exclusively use Open Path Collective to fill these spots when available. If you are looking for a more affordable option, I recommend looking into Open Path.
