Psychotherapist
CA
Julia Smith, LCSW 106946. I have been working in mental health since 2015. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Catholic University of America. My approach is to meet clients where they are and create an environment suitable for growth and vulnerability. I focus on unpacking and unlearning systemic structures that prevent healing and commitment to mental health journeys. My approach I have a background in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Attachment Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I adapt my approach based on the client’s needs. It’s important to me to foster an environment where clients can fully express and be themselves. My focus I have worked with people ages 5 to 85 from diverse backgrounds. I have the most experience with LGBTQIA+ community members, women, people with disabilities, those with depression and anxiety, and young people (13–25). My communication style I create an informal, relaxed environment. Showing up to session is hard enough, so I aim to provide a space where clients can exist authentically without judgment or formal therapeutic language. Just be who you are. My journey to mental healthcare I have been in therapy with therapists I didn’t love and sometimes really disliked. Some made me feel I had to say what they wanted to hear, be the “good therapy” client, and framed my stressors as internal rather than related to oppressive structural systems causing the hurt and need for therapy. I wanted to expand my social work practice to support those with similar experiences who took the brave first step but didn’t find the right therapist.
