Getting to know Julian Kaval
I practice direct therapy. Originally a student of alternative schooling and someone who may have sat in a chair like yours, I looked for therapists and ways to learn that worked for me personally. Before my graduate program, I found that what some therapists lacked in method, others had in heart. Fortunately I was interested in learned the most effective way is one you can personalize. I love the art of therapy and keep learning more and know want to show you . CBT/REBT, ACTtx, and mindfulness/meditation are at the top tier of evidence-based practices and treatments today, and those are what I use and will teach you.
REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) is the original CBT and is a teaching model; this means I will teach you how to utilize it for decreasing negative emotions and transform them into more positive or less negative ones, making your own style of REBT. You will learn how to change your beliefs, thoughts, and emotions to reflect a more optimistic and truer reality.
ACTtx is often more sequential and bases itself on more Eastern methods. It helps us train emotions and complements mindfulness and meditation practices. ACT treats stress as a form of pain. ACTtx aims at your living the life you want to live, according to your own values, not mine or someone else's.
I prefer to work with adults or young adults who are not taking a prescription drug approach to psychotherapy and want to learn scientifically supported skills and techniques. I specialize in reducing anxiety, anger, ADHD-related challenges, and substance abuse reduction and cessation. I am not a good fit for personality disorders or severe depression. Humor is not mandatory, though it is jokingly suggested.
The day you try to book with me, we can arrange a call to briefly discuss your symptoms that same day. Making sure I am the right provider for you is important for us.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Through researching topics including the genetic factors of musicianship, ADHD, and spirituality I found each topic revolves around free will. I think by entering therapy, an individual seeks their way from anxiety, depression, or other negative feelings (beliefs/thoughts/emotions/behaviors).
What is your typical process for working with clients?
With me as your therapist, you'll get more of a laid-back feel as we utilize evidence-based treatments, (like Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness /Meditation). The director of my psychotherapy training was a student and supervisee of Albert Ellis (creator of REBT/CBT). I have a great teaching model where not only do you get unmatched awesome therapy but you can also learn its art as you progress.

Julian brings a relaxed but practical approach to every session. I’ve found his style to be approachable and his advice practical. CBT has really helped me in ways no other therapy has. I feel like I have the tools to handle stress in daily life.

Julian is a great person who is very easy to talk to. He brings lots of insightful stories and techniques which he is able to draw from to help you see things from a different, more rational perspective. First time doing talk therapy and he was very easy to have an open conversation with. Not only that but you will learn quite a bit too.

After unsuccessfully trying a few other therapists, I found Julian through zocdoc and decided to book a session. We’ve been meeting for months and he’s helped me tremendously. Not only does he help talk through problems, he teaches and provides tools using multiple different methods so that you can continue to help yourself outside of your sessions. He’s knowledgeable in many forms of therapy and I 100% recommended booking a session especially if you are struggling with anxiety or depression.
