Karen McGuffey, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hello. My name is Karen McGuffey. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Certified Domestic Abuse Counselor. I hold a Master’s in Psychology from California State University, Hayward. I have over 13 years of experience as a therapist in Community Mental Health and 4 years in private practice. My approach I draw from a holistic mind/body approach utilizing therapies including Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Psychodynamic, and Somatic therapies. I provide trauma-informed therapy and am formally trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)—an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and unresolved trauma. My focus I work with individuals experiencing trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, chronic pain and illness, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, codependency, low self-esteem, and difficulty managing intense emotions. I also work with couples. My communication style I provide a safe therapeutic environment where you can resolve issues, deal with internal emotional conflicts, heal, and move forward. I create a healing space where growth, understanding, and change can occur. Many seek therapy feeling stuck or wanting to explore negative patterns holding them back. I also help those seeking relief from past trauma. My journey to mental healthcare I was drawn to therapy by a curiosity about why we do what we do. We are all unique, and I seek to understand each client’s reality. I also feel a need to help others who are suffering. My goals for you I collaborate with clients on setting goals. First, I listen to what a client or couple wants from therapy and make suggestions if something seems to block achieving those goals. My first session with you You can expect that I will listen to you. We can start with a specific issue that may not require exploring your history.
