Karen Vicuna, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Karen! My name is Karen Vicuna. I earned my Master's in Social Work from California State University, Sacramento, and obtained my LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in 2004. I specialize in working with youth and adolescent populations and have over 20 years of experience supporting young people through schools, county mental health, and private practice settings. My approach I have been trained in and utilize several therapies in my work, including trauma-focused CBT, CBT, EMDR, crisis intervention, and a Solution-Focused approach. Through my experience, I've learned that no matter the intervention, it really begins by finding a good fit and building a trusting therapeutic relationship. My focus While I have worked with all ages, my specialty is working with individuals ages 5-25. The most common issues I address include depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, crisis intervention, grief and loss, and social relationship challenges. My communication style I believe everyone is unique in how they take in and process information. Early therapy stages involve finding a balance and interventions that clients feel comfortable with. I connect easily with people and use a directive approach when needed, as well as a more relaxed, conversational style depending on what works best for the individual. Some clients learn best through hands-on approaches, homework, and reading to connect with emotions, while others are more auditory and benefit from questioning and discussion. Finding this balance is part of the journey. My journey to mental healthcare I discovered social work in high school and was determined to pursue a degree and clinical license. Early on, I realized I enjoy learning about people, their families, and their environments.
