Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Katherine! Hello, my name is Dr. Kate Bergam. I am a licensed marriage family therapist. I have been enjoyed working with clients for more than 20 years. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology at UCLA and earned my masters and doctorate degree in marriage family therapy at California Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology in 2001. Currently I'm working part time at College Hospital (Partial Hospitalization Program) in Signal Hill, CA. My approach I use an integrative approach. I blend together several different treatment approaches based on the client's needs. For example, I use CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I teach clients how to change their negative thought patterns which in turn helps them to influence how they feel and react. I also use a psycho dynamic therapy approach as well as psychoanalysis to explore past interactions and needs. I also like to focus on clients coping skills such as mindfulness, guided meditation, prayer, journaling, write positive affirmations on note cards, drawing/art, pet your cat/dog, plant a flower in a pot, etc. Finally I use a humanistic therapeutic approach sometimes to support and validate the clients too. My focus I work with clients who have been diagnosed with Bipolar, Severe anxiety, Major Depression, PTSD, Schizoaffective D/O and ADHD. My communication style I am told by people I am calm. They say I'm a good listener and I'm always curious to know more. I frequently ask questions to individuals because I want to understand all types of people better as well their human life experiences. I have a positive mindset. I work hard and I'm perseverant. I'm also described as "fun loving and silly." I am high spirited and playful. I also stay mindful of how I need to treat clients with the same gentleness and kindness that I treat myself with. My journey to therapy I have always known since I was 10 years old that I would grow up and make a difference in the world.
