Kelly Dwyer, LPC

Psychotherapist
VA
Hi there, I'm Kelly! I am Kelly Dwyer, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based near Virginia Beach, Virginia. I earned my MSEd in Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University. My approach to therapy is as unique as each therapeutic relationship—it's based on the individual needs of each person as well as the strategies with the best evidence for helping that situation. My focus areas of practice are wide, as my experience has spanned over 20 years. I work with adolescents, adults, and older populations and specialize in mental health, providing support when "life just feels too hard" all the way to major depression, anxiety, and delusional thought patterns. I also specialize in domestic violence, trauma, substance use disorder, relapse prevention, and developing a positive self-image. My approach I tend to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, along with Person-Centered Therapy through a trauma-focused lens to build a great relationship based on support, trust, respect—and, of course, building a mutual understanding of one's reality and shifting thought processes to better meet their desired goals in therapy. My focus I have worked with, and still work with, a wide variety of people each day. I am having difficulty articulating this; however, I will do my best. There isn't much that makes me uncomfortable, which I will say has been a direct result of my varied work history in the mental health field along with a variety of lived experiences as well. I am comfortable with all walks of life: from homelessness, financial difficulties, domestic violence, job loss, divorce, substance use, suicide attempts/ideation, single parent life, starting over and over and over... in all different cultural demographics, including the LGBTQIA+ populations. Let's say, I am passionate about my work and have enjoyed every minute—and, well, I have truly lived a "lived-in" life!
