Getting to know Kristen Cardone

Kristen Cardone is dual-licensed in Ohio as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S) and a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC). Substance use, anxiety, depression, and trauma get worked on together with one provider, so you tell your story once. She is based in Lewis Center and sees clients by video anywhere in Ohio. She has thirteen years of experience across community mental health and private practice, and she has met people at every point: the first honest conversation, the fifth attempt, and the long, uneventful stretch afterward. Her approach is grounded in harm reduction. You do not need to have decided on abstinence, or on any particular goal, before you start. If you are not sure whether your drinking or use is a problem, sorting that out is a reasonable place to begin. Kristen is EMDR-trained and works with trauma directly rather than treating it as background to the substance use, pacing it so it does not destabilize your recovery. She is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and your identity is context here rather than something to explain before the real work starts. She also works with first responders, entrepreneurs, executives, and creatives, and with shame, self-worth, burnout, and life transitions. Approaches include harm reduction, relapse prevention, EMDR, CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-focused therapy. She works with adults 18 and older in individual sessions. Outpatient therapy is the right level of care for many people, and if a higher level of care makes more sense for you, she will tell you. Your first visit is a full intake session. Sessions are held by secure video, and you need to be located in Ohio at the time of your appointment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not have to come in with a plan or a label. A lot of people start by saying they are not sure whether it is a problem, and that is a fine place to start. I will not ask you to commit to quitting before we talk, and I will not lecture you. In the first session I will ask about what you are using or drinking, what was going on before that, and what you want to be different. By the end I will tell you honestly how I would approach it, including if I think you would be better served by a higher level of care. If you slip while we are working together, we talk about it. It is information, not a failure.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After the first session, we set goals together, and they are yours to set. That might be cutting back, stopping, or just understanding your patterns better. Most clients meet with me weekly at first. I use Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT skills, and relapse prevention, and when trauma is part of the picture, I add EMDR once you have enough stability to do that work safely. We look at the anxiety, depression, or trauma underneath the substance use at the same time, not one after the other. Every few weeks we review what is working and adjust the plan. If your goals change along the way, the plan changes with them.

Ongoing session: $150 for 50 minutes

Kristen helped me understand how my anxiety, past experiences, and drinking were all connected. Having one therapist who could work with all of it together was a huge relief.
I had been avoiding therapy because I thought I needed to have my drinking figured out before I could ask for help. Kristen made it clear that I could start exactly where I was, which made a big difference.
Kristen has been great at helping me work through trauma without making me feel rushed. She explains what we’re doing, checks in with me, and makes sure I feel comfortable with the pace.
As an LGBTQ+ person, I felt very comfortable with Kristen. I didn’t have to spend time explaining or defending parts of my identity and could just focus on why I was actually there.
I’ve seen therapists before where I felt like I had to separate my mental health from everything else going on. Kristen was able to look at the whole picture, which made therapy feel much more useful.
Kristen made it easy to talk honestly about both my anxiety and my drinking without feeling judged. I appreciated that she didn’t force a label on me or tell me what my goal had to be.
I really appreciate Kristen’s approach to recovery. If something doesn’t go perfectly, she doesn’t make you feel like you failed. We look at what happened, learn from it, and figure out what to do next.
I was nervous about talking about my substance use because I didn’t want to be judged or immediately told I had to quit. Kristen met me where I was and helped me think through what I actually wanted to change.
