Getting to know Kristen Nurkowski

As a licensed clinical social worker, I take a humanistic perspective, utilizing both psychodynamic and holistic approaches to support my clients in moving toward their valued direction and developing the skills to do so. Only by taking the time to explore your inner workings can we begin to identify and eradicate what doesn't work by developing strategies and moving toward what does, allowing a healthy, authentic adult version of you to emerge. My top driving values include respecting the client's right to self-determination and enhancing their personal autonomy by creating a safe and non-judgmental space for authentic self-exploration. My career started in 2005 at an all-male residential school (ages 11-18) after graduating with my BA in Special Education; followed by prison re-entry work in Camden, NJ, for five years while attending Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where I earned my Master's in Social Work. I was eventually promoted to manager of a care team for two years; then I worked at an IOP dual diagnosis addiction treatment center in San Diego, CA, for five years; and I am currently in private practice. Having worked with various populations throughout the years, I feel comfortable working with a wide range of issues, cultures, and genders. It's the difficulties we endure and the obstacles we overcome that build our character. Congratulations on taking the first step to building yours.
