Kristie Garcia, LCSW

Psychotherapist
TX
I am relatively new to the independent therapy practice world. My previous career experience involves working in a dual role where I worked administratively in a child psychiatric facility while providing individual, group, and family therapy. We can learn and embark on our therapeutic journeys together, and because I know I am still learning and growing, I am open to constructive feedback to become a better therapist as well. My approach I tailor our approach to treatment beginning where you are. I am most skilled in using the DBT modality to help practice mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation skills. However, I am continuing to educate myself on different approaches, so we can explore different types of skills as we continue to work together. My focus Most recently, I worked with adolescent girls in the inpatient side who were experiencing anxiety, depression, and thoughts of self-harm. We often worked together on increasing self-esteem, improving communication skills, and practicing emotional regulation skills. I have worked mostly with children and adolescents, but have learned to work with parents and families as a complete unit as well. My communication style Communication was one of the biggest goals that I worked on with children and families. I make sure to ask a lot of questions to ensure I understand your point of view. I prefer to listen to what you have to say, but I also make sure to read body language. Even when we say nothing, we are still communicating. I will be sure to be open and direct to support you in the best way possible. My journey to mental healthcare It all started when I began working at a Residential Treatment Center right out of college. I started out as a direct technician who would guide patients to their day-to-day activities. I enjoyed working with the kids and put off getting my license because I did not feel that therapy was right for me at that time.
