Making the decision to begin therapy is a big step. Rula and I congratulate you on starting your journey and we are here to make sure that it is meaningful to you. I personally, specialize in working with individuals navigating life or gender transitions, anxiety, depression, and substance use. I take a client-centered, collaborative approach to therapy, always remembering that you are the expert in your life and I have been granted visiting privileges. Together, we will collaboratively tailor each session to your unique needs and goals. I welcome you to reach out whenever you feel ready to begin. I’m here to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can be yourself. I use various forms of therapy, ranging from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help you identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns, work towards recovering from addiction, and identify cognitive fallacies. This approach is hands-on and gives you tools to feel more in control of your emotions and behaviors. Based on your unique needs, I may adapt my approach to include practices like mindfulness and/or harm reduction. I will introduce you to motivational interviewing, which will assist us in identifying the stages of change and motivation for doing (or not doing) so. Your goals and progress are my primary focus. Together, we’ll identify challenges and work on strategies to help you move forward with confidence.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Have you been struggling with addiction, anxious thoughts and self-doubt? I work with young to aging adults who are managing anxiety, life (or gender) transitions, and those seeking support for self-esteem issues. Whether you’re working through recovery from substance abuse, building coping (or self-confidence) skills, or exploring your personal goals, I’ll work with you to create a plan for growth that feels empowering and achievable. I prioritize clear, open communication to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment. I practice active listening and reflective questioning, which will give you (us) opportunities to reflect on your experiences with you as an empathetic partner in our sessions, again, as the expert in your life. If we’re working through something challenging, you can expect me to be calm, supportive, validating, and patient. Our first session will be an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We’ll discuss your background (and maybe some of mine, since we are building rapport and learning to trust each other) and what brings you to therapy. Therapy is a process, and we’ll continue to build our work together over time. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about your first appointment. We’ll take it one step at a time, and I’m here to guide you through each step of the process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe that therapy is a partnership. Together, we’ll identify and set goals that matter to you whether they focus on improving relationships, building self-esteem or another personal objective. As we work together, your goals may evolve as you gain new insights. We can adapt our plan at any time to ensure it’s always meaningful and relevant to you. I’m here to provide you with the support and tools you need to continue to move closer to where you want to be, even when things feel challenging. My journey into therapy began with my own lived experiences. Before attending graduate school, I was a high school dropout with a GED. I have a checkered past that involves incarceration/homelessness/addiction/family dysfunction, and alcoholism. I just celebrated 19 years clean and sober. I am married now, with children, and I have fostered through my own recovery a deep curiosity about human resilience and the desire to help others find their strength through life’s hardest challenges. During my graduate training, I had the opportunity to work with survivors of trauma, military men and women suffering from PTSD and/or MST (military sexual trauma), and more. My personal (and professional) experiences have shown me the powerful role that resilience can play in therapy. My own recovery from poor decisions/dysfunctional relationships, destitution, and addiction has solidified my commitment to supporting others through their arduous and healing journeys. I’m continually driven by the fundamental belief that everyone has the potential for positive growth and change, and we can all have a second chance at a first-class life. Seeing my clients gain confidence or find peace makes my work incredibly rewarding.
