“I have been seeing Laura for over 8 months because she is the first therapist to make me truly feel seen and heard. She understands how to listen to her patients and let them vent while providing solutions and asking follow-up questions to help you work through your concerns. Her style of communication almost feels like you are talking to a friend. I feel comfortable talking to her and am satisfied with all the progress I have made to work towards my goals and discuss my issues with her.”

Getting to know Laura Hileman

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University and have been practicing for 5 years. I enjoy working with individual adults to help them increase self-awareness, realize their full potential and purpose, and heal from relationship or attachment trauma. My clients are often going through difficult life transitions, anxiety, depression, or searching for and asking some of the deeper questions in life. They may be thinking things like "Why do I keep doing this?", "Why do I feel stuck?", "Why do I feel like I'm not truly being myself?", or "How do I handle these emotions?". My approach I believe our attachment styles & early relationships can form certain dynamics within us that cause us to recreate those relationship patterns later in life with romantic partners, co-workers, family members, children, or friendships. Attachment style therapy involves you & I developing a strong empathic attunement in therapy, which can help us to uncover your style and current approach to creating attachments. I use a Psychodynamic approach in therapy to help you gain insight into deeper aspects of yourself, including things you may not even be aware of that are affecting your mood & choices. I also believe in helping you gain the ability to identify your emotions & increase your experiential awareness and confidence in your ability to process and gain insight from them. In a session, I would listen intently, ask reflective questions, or ask you to pause and consider what emotion you are feeling. I also use a Humanistic or Person-Centered approach in therapy because I believe in also being an open and authentic person with you in the therapy room. I want to reflect back to you what I hear you saying to help you gain better self-awareness, insight, and clarity. I want to help you feel empowered in knowing yourself, finding your confidence, and accepting yourself.

I feel that Laura is truly trying to understand me as we have our sessions. She asks thoughtful questions and offers her thoughts based on what I share with her and helped me realize how some of my habits developed based on past traumas and expectations that I never realized before. Choosing her to work and understand my attachment style and anxiety has been truly eye opening and I look forward to continue working with her.
