Getting to know Laura Nelson
Hi, my name is Laura Nelson, but I go by Lori. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 24 years of experience. I earned my Master's in Social Work from the University of Kansas. I worked in schools as a School Social Worker for 12 years and have spent the last 11 years working in the prison system. My approach to therapy is grounded in building a relationship of trust, warmth, and acceptance. I have expertise in autism, anger management, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and various issues concerning children.
My approach
I believe that therapy begins with establishing a solid, trusting relationship with my clients. Without that foundation, theoretical approaches have little value. Once trust is established, I draw from various methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Theory, and Solution Focused Therapy to best meet my clients' needs.
My focus
I have experience treating adults facing depression, anxiety, anger management, relationship challenges, parenting issues, and stress or time management difficulties. I also work with children dealing with divorce, loss and grief, behavioral problems, ADHD, anxiety, and depression.
My communication style
I strive to create a warm, accepting, and open environment. I listen more than I talk and make it a priority to get to know my clients as individuals. The most important part of therapy for me is building an open, trusting relationship. Working with me means feeling genuinely cared for and understood. I also use humor in my work, as I believe it helps clients feel comfortable and at ease.
My journey to mental healthcare
My path to becoming a therapist began when I was 27 and worked as a receptionist in a mental health agency. That experience inspired me to pursue this meaningful work.
