Getting to know Leslie Brody

I’m a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision designation (LISW-S) and a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor with Clinical Supervision endorsement (LICDC-CS), focused on providing behavioral healthcare to older adults. It is my privilege to accompany clients as they navigate the emotional, physical, and life transitions that come with aging. Along the way, we may also resolve old baggage and experiences, and increase hope, functioning, and purpose. When I’m not working, I like to attend concerts (music and comedy), spend time with family, and offer or attend trainings.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have adopted an age-responsive mindset in my many years of serving older adults. My approach to care assumes the person is not the problem. The problem is the problem. Dignity and respect must be demonstrated at all times. If previously developed coping skills are no longer viable, we can find new ones in partnership together. The client is the expert on themselves, and I want to reveal their wisdom, not impose mine. Relationship comes before counseling strategies. Care must be person-centered and individualized. Authenticity and transparency matter. Meaning making, purpose, and change can happen at any stage of life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First session will include introductions, answering your questions, and getting a fuller picture of where we are starting from and where you want to go. I will likely ask some screening questions related to anxiety and depression. I may also ask about other factors that impact feelings and functioning. There will be a brief nuts-and-bolts discussion about confidentiality and informed consent. I want to get to know you better and ensure that my skill set is aligned with your goals. I will ask for feedback about our session, rapport, comfort level, and more. We will then schedule a follow-up session.
