Psychotherapist
NY
Hi There, I'm Lisa! I am a New York State Licensed Mental Health Therapist with a background in trauma and teen violence. I am passionate about working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, and life transitions in a collaborative way to help move them toward self-betterment. My approach My therapeutic approach is integrative, as there is no one size fits all for a client. I often utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, and strength-based therapy. I provide a warm, empathetic, collaborative, non-judgmental environment that allows you to feel safe and heard as we navigate life’s challenges, explore practical coping skills, and discover hidden strengths. I work collaboratively with clients to identify treatment goals and plans to ensure their true desires are met throughout therapy. My focus I have a special interest in supporting clients experiencing anxiety, depression, anger issues, acculturation struggles, and stress. I also have extensive experience working with at-risk teens. I am a culturally competent therapist and have a great rapport with clients regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or background. My communication style I am an active listener who validates, reframes, and provides emotional support as needed. I am warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental. I intentionally acknowledge opportunities to point out growth and strength. My journey to therapy I completed my Master’s in Forensic Mental Health Counseling at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of the City University of New York, with a certification in Victimology Studies. Initially, I became a therapist to help people cope with physical and sexual abuse. I transitioned to working with at-risk youths to reduce their likelihood of incarceration, as I am passionate about addressing the school-to-prison pipeline and racial injustices.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first session is a chance for the client to share why he or she is seeking therapy and provide some background information so that I am properly informed in a way that allows me to appropriately work with him or her. It is also a chance to discuss HIPAA compliance, treatment expectations, modalities used, and confidentiality in general. The client can also clarify any questions he or she may have about the process and contact information is also provided.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session looks like the client and I collaborating to determine his or her presenting concerns. Once established, I provide a safe; non-judgmental environment; for my client to feel seen and heard. During this time, I help the client to process his or her thoughts, feelings, and emotions and provide emotional support, validation, cognitive reframes, and case conceptualizations as needed. The client and I then collaborate to identify the most effective interventions as needed. Home-practice is assigned in most cases for the client to practice coping skills between sessions for sustainability.
