I am a licensed professional counselor. I’ve been in practice 45 years. During that time I’ve been fortunate to work in all areas of the mental health field. I work with all age groups, and over the years have been able to develop a counseling style that meets individual needs. In terms of approach the feedback I get from clients is that I can be very matter-of-fact in a good way. I primarily like to work with a clean slate. So the first session usually involves talking about what’s going on with the client and in doing so listen and address issues and concerns. At this point if a diagnosis is made and medication is required then the client is referred to either their family doctor or a local psychiatrist. If a client is wanting to return for future counseling, a treatment plan will be developed at that time. Because I have been counseling for many years what used to take 15 to 20 sessions now takes five or six. This short term counseling approach has proven very effective. The only exception would be trauma therapy, which would take much longer and involve more extensive counseling. Over the years I’ve tried to work with all types of clients. I find it refreshing to work with clients with less serious and more manageable problems. This helps me deal with the problematic clients that require much more energy and expertise. In addition, although I enjoy working with addiction, I limit my involvement because it is by nature time consuming and frustrating but fulfilling.
