What should a new client know about working with you?

Since becoming an LCSW, I have worked in a variety of mental health settings including community mental health, school social work, and university counseling. I am an unconventional therapist in that it is a second career for me following a 10-year career in construction project management. I draw on my own varied life experience to both identify with client struggles and aid in the improvement of their mental health. I understand the daily challenges clients face and value the tapestry of life experience that has brought each client to where they are now. I highly value the relationships we develop, whether they be coworkers, classmates, community-based, or romantic. I place a strong emphasis on creating and maintaining a robust social support network to sustain mental wellbeing. I also examine each person's lifestyle habits, including substance use, exercise, work/life balance, recreational activities, and social media use.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My practice emphasizes the role each client plays in their own mental health and employs their self-determination as an essential component in the achievement of their therapy goals. I use a combination of different therapy techniques to create a welcoming and helpful therapy environment to assist clients in improving their mental health. In our first session together, we'll explore what is happening in your life that has led you to therapy and determine what you hope to achieve. From there we will collaborate to identify what are going to be the most helpful ways for you to achieve your therapy goals and together create a plan to achieve them. Typical sessions thereafter will allow you space to provide updates on your progress, discuss current and ongoing concerns, and collaborate to continue toward making the desired improvement.
