Mara Thornberg, NCC, LPC, LCPC

Psychotherapist
TX
I'm Mara Thornberg, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, LCPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC) with a background that is both personal and professional. I grew up navigating poverty, substance use, and instability, and later served as a National Guard NCO and Active Duty Officer. Those experiences gave me a firsthand understanding of invisible wounds, and a genuine respect for the strength it takes to seek support. I earned MA in Counseling so I could offer grounded, informed care to people carrying complex stories. Today, I specialize in trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and relational stress, serving adults online across Colorado, Montana, and Texas. My approach is person-centered and holistic, blending EMDR, somatic therapy, sandtray, and trauma-focused psychotherapy to help healing reach both mind and body. I work collaboratively with each client to create a plan tailored to their nervous system, history, and current reality, at a pace that feels safe and sustainable. If you are a veteran, first responder, or anyone who has carried more than your share, you will find a space here where your full story is welcome and your experience is understood. I offer flexible telehealth scheduling, transparent pricing, and sliding-scale options to reduce barriers to care. I invite you to begin with a free 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit.

I invite you to begin with a free 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel uncertain, so here is what you can expect when you work with me. We start slowly and safely. Our first step is a free 15-minute consultation, no pressure, no commitment. It is simply a chance to talk, ask questions, and see if we feel like a good fit. All sessions are online. I see clients exclusively via telehealth using a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform (SimplePractice and Tava Health). This means you can access care from the comfort of your own home, wherever you are in Colorado, Montana, or Texas. You set the pace. Most clients begin with weekly sessions, and we adjust from there based on your needs and progress. There is no fixed number of sessions, your journey is your own, and I will follow your lead. My approach works with your whole nervous system. I use EMDR, somatic therapy, sandtray, and trauma-focused psychotherapy. These are not one-size-fits-all techniques. I blend them based on what fits you, your history, and how your body holds stress. Therapy is real work, and I will be honest about that. Healing sometimes means revisiting difficult memories or emotions. You may feel discomfort along the way, and that is normal. I will be transparent throughout the process, and you always have full choice about what we explore and when. You are welcome here as you are. I serve teens and adults from all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals, veterans, military families, and people navigating cultural or religious identity. This is a non-judgmental space. Insurance and fees are straightforward. Sessions are $150 for 45 minutes or $200 for 60 minutes. I accept Aetna, BCBS, Cigna/Evernorth, UHC/UBH, Tricare West, Triwest, and others. If your plan is not listed, I can provide a superbill for potential reimbursement.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. Here is what you can expect when we work together: Free 15-minute consultation. This is a low-pressure call to see if we are a good fit and to answer any questions you have. There is no commitment required. Intake session. We will talk about your history and what you want your future to look like. This conversation shapes everything that follows. Building the foundation. Before we process trauma, we spend time building your personal safety and stabilization skills. Healing cannot happen without a stable foundation first. Targeted treatment. Using person-centered, neurological, developmental, experiential, trauma, somatic, and mindfulness informed techniques, we work together to address the root of your distress, not just the symptoms on the surface. Ongoing growth. Through weekly or bi-weekly sessions, we integrate these shifts into your everyday life until you feel confident and empowered to move forward on your own. We may use assessment tools to track your progress or direct feedback.
