Getting to know Mark Chaney-Gay

Hello. My name is Mark. I am a gay, disabled therapist and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California. I believe we all have strengths to overcome or cope with challenges; we might just need a little support. My approach I take an eclectic approach to therapy, focusing on you as a unique individual and pulling from multiple approaches to find the best fit. Common methods I use include cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, and strengths-based methods. My focus I work with a wide range of clients but have a passion for supporting those with disabilities, foster care experience, and members of the LGBTQI community. I assist clients facing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and life transitions. My communication style In sessions, you can expect a direct and empathetic approach. Sometimes we need someone to listen without jumping to solutions, sometimes to sit with us in our thoughts and feelings, and other times to be active and communicative. I blend these approaches and often ask questions to help clients explore their experiences. My journey to therapy I have personal and lived experience with foster care, disability, and being LGBTQ. These experiences led me to therapy. I believe we can all live healthy, fulfilling lives, and that everyone has strengths, dignity, and worth. My goals for you You are the expert in your experience and goals. I will work with you to identify the most important or appropriate goal, always keeping you and your goals at the center. My first session with you During our first session, you can expect an introduction to the therapeutic process. I am here to answer your questions and help you explore if I am the right fit. I will also complete an assessment to understand your history, needs, and goals for our work.

Mark is amazing. He’s a very open and understanding individual, inherently. He really is good at developing an open communication route and building a good foundation. Thanks Mark :)
Mark has changed my life for the better. I had seen previous therapists before, but I have never had a therapist that matches my needs like Mark does. After hearing my fears and anxieties, Mark will help me to reframe those thoughts in a healthier way using a variety of CBT activities (ABC method, socratic questioning, checking my facts, etc.). Mark is also kind, understanding, and has never made me feel judged. He is amazing!
