Psychotherapist
CA
A general theme of input from clients is a balance of acceptance and motivation to change: that we are a product of our environment, doing our best, and want to do better. If that sounds right for you, schedule an appointment. My approach A fundamental basis of successful outcomes in therapy is the belief that a therapist works with the human first. As a DBT practitioner, I strive to embody the values of meeting with a client where they're out, focusing on and challenging problem behaviors that work against our own self-identified goals through a critical, objective lens to challenge our beliefs about ourselves that hold us back, taking the edge off with humor. I focus on the present because the future and its problems can be estimated but not predicted, and we can't change the past. My focus I do good work with clients who feel given up on, trapped in a cycle, and unsure how to break out, people who have felt like the traditional style hasn't worked for them, people who are comfortable with disentangling their identity from the problem behavior and having the behavior challenged. My communication style Administration has told me that a therapist shouldn't be funny, but a lot of clients think that I am anyway, and that it works for them because sometimes our problems feel a lot more serious than they are. A critical component of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is irreverence: that the typical therapeutic presentation can contribute to the behavioral cycle, and that by breaking the mask, we're forced to consider things from a different perspective. My journey to mental healthcare I was at a period of critical life stage transition, wondering what I was going to do after college, working as a research assistant for the UCLA urban planning department, stopped focusing on counting bikes (my bad, Herbie), and ended up talking to a person on the street for an hour. Towards the end, he started crying and saying nobody ever talks to or listens to him.
