Change for the better is good. Yet any change is difficult. Many of us do well at managing our lives by mitigating our problems with justifications like, "It's not that bad...things could be worse." Until, one day, the epiphany hits, and we realize that we need help. I urge my patients to excavate patterns from their past that may be holding them back, so we can work toward solutions and strategies for bettering their lives and relationships. My work has been varied and rewarding, seeing individuals and couples, using interventions that spur communication while maintaining mutual respect. I also work with people diagnosed with cancer and other chronic illnesses. Out of the imbalance this creates, many other issues geyser to the surface. Also, I am certified in EMDR. My approach I first ask them why they want to start therapy, which will prompt them to tell me their present issues. Then, I like to ask curiosity questions, and get as much information as I can about their past, so we can, together, see how that might have informed their present problems. I like to identify the seams where past meets present. My focus I will always be honest with my clients. If I meet someone who might be better served with a different therapist, I will help that client find someone new. I have no ego involvement. But, if it seems to be a match, I will ask them where I should put most of my focus with them. After they reveal the main reason they have arrived in my office, I will ask them to tell me details of that focus. Sometimes, these conversations spurs them to change or tweak their focus. It's interesting how revelatory it is for the clients to just hear themselves 'say the thing out loud.' My communication style I set a very non-judgmental tone in our session. I make sure they know how much it means to me that they are willing to share their life with me, and also assure them that this session is confidential
