Getting to know Mary Karlan

I am a licensed clinical social worker in private practice since 2015. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University. Before that, I gained years of experience working as a program director for a mental health agency in Connecticut. After my Master’s degree, I completed a two-year training in Couple and Family Therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in Manhattan. Since 2018, I have also been working as a provider on the Emergency Mental Health Services Team. I am trained in the diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with mental health crises in the ER. My client base is diverse. I have treated patients of all backgrounds, including children, adolescents, teens, young adults, adults, couples, blended families, and the elderly population. My work also includes treating LGBTQ patients and patients of diverse cultural identification. I have extensive experience treating mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, thought disorders, as well as life transitions, relationship challenges, and trauma-related disorders. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; however, each case is unique, and I may also use other modalities I find useful, such as DBT, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, and more. Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
